FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 19, 2024

Toronto, ON - AED Foundation Ontario (AEDFO) today announced its formal designation by Ontario’s Ministry of Health as the official provincial registrar of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This designation recognizes AEDFO as the central authority responsible for maintaining a comprehensive, accurate, and integrated registry of publicly and privately accessible AEDs across Ontario.

The provincial registry plays a critical role in strengthening Ontario’s emergency response system by ensuring that registered AEDs are visible to 911 dispatchers so that, in the event of a cardiac arrest, bystanders can be directed to the nearest AED, increasing the chances of survival.

As Ontario’s official AED registrar, AEDFO is building a coordinated system that connects lifesaving devices directly to emergency response. The goal is making sure every publicly accessible AED in Ontario is known, validated as ready to rescue, and accessible when seconds matter most.

Through this designation, AEDFO will lead efforts to register AED locations, support validation of devices, integrate registry data with dispatch systems, support compliance, and increase public awareness.

The registry strengthens the chain of survival by enabling faster intervention during out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Immediate CPR and early defibrillation can double or triple survival rates.

By removing barriers between a cardiac emergency and the tools that save lives, every AED that is registered and connected to our system becomes part of a province-wide safety net for families, workplaces, and communities.”

AED Foundation Ontario works with partners across sectors to ensure widespread adoption and encourages all AED owners to register their devices.
