The AED Foundation of Ontario (AEDFO) was pleased to welcome CityNews into our office recently to contribute to their coverage of Toronto’s consideration of mandatory AED access in high-rise residential buildings. As the city evaluates this important proposal, we were grateful for the opportunity to provide context, data, and perspective drawn from our work advancing cardiac-arrest preparedness across Ontario.
During the visit, founder Roberta Scott spoke to the unique challenges that high-rise living presents during medical emergencies. In buildings where elevators, security systems, and vertical travel can delay paramedic access, the presence of a readily available Automated External Defibrillator becomes not just beneficial — but essential. Early defibrillation saves lives, and AEDs placed strategically in residential towers can bridge the critical gap before first responders arrive.
We are encouraged to see public awareness growing and heartened that CityNews is helping to bring this conversation into the spotlight. As Toronto continues to rise vertically, ensuring AED accessibility in the places people live is a natural and necessary step toward stronger community safety.
AEDFO remains committed to supporting this work through advocacy, education, and collaboration with residents, policymakers, and media partners. We thank CityNews for taking the time to learn more — and for helping advance a dialogue that has the potential to save countless lives.
